History

Moor Allerton Golf Club was founded in 1923 (course designed by Dr. Alastair Mackenzie) and members continued to play golf on the original site, Nursery Lane in the Moor Allerton district of Leeds, until 1970.

In 1970, due to the demand for membership, the club relocated to it’s current site near the village of Wike in North Leeds, 10 minutes drive from the original site. The course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Robert Trent-Jones Senior.

Our overriding objective is to provide a golfing experience second to none in the county of Yorkshire. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming club to both members and visitors alike.

The club was founded as a Jewish Golf Club and is proud to be open to all, irrespective of race, colour or creed.

Moor Allerton Golf Club has a rich history and many famous players have walked the fairways, particularly back in the days when the PGA European Tour used to visit Yorkshire. Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Brian Barnes to name but a few.

Ryder Cup legend Howard Clark was also attached to Moor Allerton Golf Club as a playing professional and of course, the legendary Peter Alliss, who was the Head Professional in the early 70s and continued to remain a close friend of the Club until his passing.

About A History of Moor Allerton Golf Club

Ted Hyman was a long-standing member of the Club and in the late 1990’s was asked to produce a book entitled The History of Moor Allerton Golf Club covering its formation and up to 1994.

Ted also produced a second volume covering the next seven years or so and this was followed by volume 3 produced by former Chairman, Stephen Mack which covered the period from 2001 up to the 2023 which was the year of the Club’s Centenary.

It is an in-depth coverage of the circumstances leading to the creation of the first Jewish Golf Club in Europe and arguably the first in the world, the reasons for the move from north Leeds to Wike. It  highlights along the way some of the most prominent and influential members, leading up to the present day where Moor Allerton is firmly established as one of the leading golf clubs in the north of England with members from all walks of life, cultures and religions.
